Carlo Cignani, the leading Bolognese painter of the late 17th century, painted this intriguing motif on several occasions (see his picture of around 1678/80 in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie). At this time Cignani was an exponent of a primarily secular art, informed by the taste of the wealthy bourgeoisie.
